One of the great quintessential American Hymns was written by
Julia Ward Howe rather early during the American Civil War. We know it as “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” It is sung frequently in our country today.
The first two verses speak of God’s judgment. One might expect that as the author was a tireless and outspoken campaigner for women’s rights, the abolition of slavery, prison reform and world peace.
The third verse is a source of surprise, amazement and inspiration. It goes like this.
“In the beauty of the lilies
Christ was born across the sea,
with a glory in his bosom
that transfigures you and me;
As he died to make men holy,
let us live to make men free!
While God is marching on.”
In the face of what Christ has done for us, let us accept the
challenge. Let us live to make men free!
